Meet Louise

a few words ...

“ I have a fanatically loud and passionate mind. Visual communication through the lens of art, design and architecture is my vessel for reaction and expression. I take great joy in the approach and operation between these creative disciplines to get unexpected outcomes that moves away from convention and expectation – whether it is an object, an interior, a space or a building. It all forms part of a means to explore myself, others and our contexts in a somewhat beautiful, peculiar and conflicted world.”

biography

Louise studied at the Oxford Brookes School of Architecture gaining a first class honours degree and double distinctions in her Architectural Diploma and specialised Masters in Advanced Architectural Design (AAD). During her time at the university her work was shortlisted for and won awards, being the 2009 winner of ‘hand-drawn 3D representation’ by architectural practice Scott Brownrigg, awarded for the most ‘original’ design work by the school in 2012 for her Master’s thesis and was nominated for the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Silver Medal award later that year whilst exhibiting her work at the RIBA head office in Portland Place, London.

Outside of university Louise has gained experience in retail, graphic design and varied approaches to architectural practice. In 2012, she began working in London for a leading architectural firm, qualifying as an Architect with the UK Architects Registration Board (ARB) in 2015. During this time she formed part of the design team that delivered the unique residential project Gasholders London from inception to completion for almost 5 years. As she describes, “working alongside industry leading experts has been invaluable in grounding, technically understanding and delivering ideas in the context of world renowned practice”.

Having completed in 2018, the project has been shortlisted for and won several awards including a 2018 RIBA National Award, The Sunday Times British Homes Awards for Development of the Year and been labelled as one of the “most unusal places to live in London” by The Spaces online magazine. You can read the full press coverage of the project here.

Following the completion of Gasholders London Louise took the leap to go freelance in a pursuit to seek a more holistic and authentic approach to architectural practice whilst being able to meet other individuals, studios, companies, organisations and brands making progressive change through creative discourse. This has cultivated collaborations with a range of emerging talent which continues to challenge and broaden her understanding of the industry she loves and plans on helping to push to do better.

Louise launched the CANN Design studio in 2021 - journaling and publicising her work, collaborations and beliefs for the first time.

Alongside studio operation Louise teaches at the Oxford Brookes School of Architecture as an Associate Lecturer in two Master’s level teaching positions. Previously alongside Professor Andrew Holmes, and most recently, alongside Professor Nicholas Boyarsky, Jason Coleman and Duc Lee for MArchD Architecture Design Studio 4 and Joel Chappell, Declan Molloy and Xana Murrell for the MA/MArchD Advanced Architectural Design (AAD) specialisation.

Louise is an advocate for women and diversity in architecture and the wider construction industry, believing in the access of design and its education for all. Through the studios work and virtual presence she aims to openly engage, discuss and continue to raise awareness of these issues.
